Khmer on stage: Bassac Theatre 'The Story of Tip Sangvar'
Lakhaon Bassac is a vibrant and colourful form of Cambodian folk theatre that emerged in the early 20th century.
It blends spoken dialogue, songs, dances and acrobatics, often accompanied by a rhythmic orchestra. Its stories are drawn from Buddhist or royal legends, depicting the eternal struggle between good and evil, with iconic characters such as princes, princesses and giants with spectacularly painted faces.
Episode: The Story of Tip Sangvar
This royal epic recounts the trials of Prince Preah Phirun and Princess Tip Sangvar.
Separated by kidnappings, wars against evil giants and exile, they must overcome numerous supernatural obstacles. With the help of sages and deities, their two sons grow up to become powerful warriors and reunite the family after defeating their enemies. It is a story of destiny, epic battles and joyous family reunions.
