Details
This February’s Monthly Classical Concert brings together two monumental composers who defined the expressive and technical possibilities of the piano from very different historical perspectives: Ludwig van Beethoven and Sergei Rachmaninoff.
Beethoven, composing at the beginning of the 19th century, stands at the threshold between the Classical and Romantic eras. His piano music transforms balance and clarity into expressive struggle. Beneath its structural precision lies a powerful inner drama, where emotion is shaped through tension, contrast and resolve. Each work feels driven by a sense of urgency and personal voice that forever changed the language of Western music.
Rachmaninoff, writing a century later, stands at the opposite end of Romanticism. His music looks back with nostalgia, expanding the piano’s sonority, colour and emotional depth to their fullest extent. Rich harmonies, sweeping melodies and a deeply personal lyricism define a sound world that would soon give way to modernism.
Performed by Lee Jea Phang (Kuala Lumpur), this superb piano recital offers audiences a rare opportunity to experience the piano as both a site of heroic struggle and a vessel of deep emotional reflection.
